What Is a Bolted Steel Tank and When Does It Make Sense?

A bolted steel tank is a modular storage vessel built from prefabricated steel panels joined with bolts and sealant instead of being welded together. The panels arrive on site with their anti-corrosion coating already factory-applied —glass-fused-to-steel (GFS), epoxy or galvanized— and are erected on a concrete foundation following the AWWA D103 standard. The result is a highly durable cylindrical tank that goes up in weeks rather than months, and that can be expanded or relocated.

How it is manufactured and assembled

The logic of bolting is simple: separate fabrication from construction. Steel sheet is cut, formed and coated in an industrial plant under quality control, and only then ships to the site as a kit of panels, bolts, sealant and accessories.

Assembly usually relies on jacking: the top ring is bolted together at ground level, lifted with hydraulic jacks, and the next ring is bolted underneath, repeating until the full height is reached. Crews therefore work close to the ground, with better safety and no tall scaffolding.

  • Foundation: concrete slab or ring beam sized for the soil and the load.
  • Panels: coated carbon steel; plate thickness varies by ring according to hydrostatic pressure.
  • Sealing: gaskets and sealant between panels and over each bolt head to ensure watertightness.
  • Accessories: ladders, roof (self-supporting aluminum or geodesic dome), nozzles, vents and instrumentation.

The versatility of bolting covers almost the entire water and industrial-gas cycle:

  • Potable water: reservoirs at treatment plants (WTP) and distribution networks.
  • Wastewater: reactors and process tanks at treatment plants (WWTP), where GFS resists biological corrosion.

When does it beat welded or concrete?

The bolted tank wins when schedule, factory-applied coating quality, the ability to expand or relocate, and long-term maintenance all matter. Field-welded steel means on-site welding, testing and painting exposed to the weather; concrete requires formwork, curing and tends to crack over time.

Bolting stands out especially when:

  • The schedule is critical and months of civil works are not an option.
  • The liquid is corrosive and a factory-controlled coating (GFS) is needed.
  • The project may grow and it helps to expand capacity by adding rings.
  • The asset might be relocated later, which is nearly impossible with concrete.

Can capacity be expanded later?
