The glass-fused-to-steel (GFS) coating lasts longer than epoxy: it is a ceramic layer fused to steel at around 800 °C under the ISO 28765 standard, with a service life of 40+ years with no recoating, while epoxy is an organic paint that typically lasts 15-25 years and needs touch-ups. GFS wins on durability and chemical resistance; epoxy wins on up-front cost and field repairability. The right choice depends on the fluid and the project life cycle.

What each coating is

GFS is produced by applying a glass frit onto the steel and firing it: the glass melts and bonds mechanically and chemically to the metal, forming a smooth, inert, non-porous ceramic surface. It is not paint, it is glass. That is why it does not rust or peel.

Epoxy is an epoxy-resin paint (liquid or powder) that cures into a hard, adherent film. It creates a continuous barrier against water, but being organic it is more sensitive to UV, abrasion and certain chemicals, and it degrades over time.

Durability and corrosion

The core difference is corrosion. GFS is inert: with no porosity and no organic components, there is no path for moisture or chemicals to attack the base steel. It resists the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and acids found in biogas digesters and wastewater, where paint blisters and fails.

Epoxy protects well while the film is intact, but any microcrack, impact or wear opens a corrosion point that progresses under the coating. That is why it needs inspection and repainting throughout its life.

Cost: up-front vs. life cycle

Epoxy has a lower up-front cost, which makes it attractive for clean water or tight budgets. But once you add maintenance —repaints, service shutdowns, inspections— over 40 years, GFS is usually cheaper on total cost of ownership, and it avoids operational interruptions.

The rule of thumb: for a long-life asset with an aggressive fluid, GFS pays for itself; for a short service with clean water, epoxy may be enough.

Factory application and quality control

Both coatings are applied in the plant, but the process is very different. GFS is fired at high temperature: thickness and adhesion are controlled panel by panel, and freedom from pores is verified with continuity testing (electrical holiday detection). That ceramic layer becomes inseparable from the steel.

Epoxy is applied by spraying or dipping and cured in an oven; its quality depends on surface preparation (blasting), dry film thickness and curing conditions. Well executed it is a reliable coating, but any deviation in those parameters shortens its service life.

When to use each one

  • Choose GFS for effluent, biogas, leachate, long-term potable water and any corrosive or abrasive fluid.
  • Choose epoxy for raw or clean treated water, fire-protection reserves, or when the up-front budget rules and the fluid is not aggressive.

Which lasts longer, GFS or epoxy?

Does epoxy work for wastewater or biogas?

It is not ideal. Wastewater and biogas generate acids and hydrogen sulfide that degrade epoxy paint over time. For those corrosive fluids the glass-fused (GFS) coating, which is inert, is recommended.

Why does GFS cost more up front?

Because manufacturing it requires applying and firing a glass frit at high temperature in a plant, a more complex process than painting. That higher up-front cost is offset by decades with no recoating or maintenance shutdowns.

Can GFS be repaired if damaged?

Yes, with localized repair kits for small damage. However, with no porosity and no UV degradation, damage is far less frequent than with an epoxy coating.

Are both suitable for potable water?

Yes, there are GFS and epoxy formulations approved for potable-water contact. GFS offers greater durability and no recoating; epoxy is a valid lower up-front cost option when the water is clean.
