For most water, wastewater and biogas storage projects, the bolted steel tank beats welded and concrete on install time (weeks instead of months), factory-applied anti-corrosion coating, and the ability to expand or relocate. Welded steel suits special pressures and geometries; concrete still makes sense for very large buried volumes or permanent assets. Bolted tank: speed and factory coating

The bolted tank is manufactured as a kit of coated steel panels —glass-fused-to-steel (GFS), epoxy or galvanized— bolted on site over a concrete foundation, following the AWWA D103 standard. Its big advantage is that the anti-corrosion protection is applied in the plant under quality control, not exposed to site dust and moisture.

Welded steel: powerful but tied to the site

The welded tank is built by joining plates with welding, on site or in a shop. It can reach pressures and geometries bolting cannot cover, and is common in process industries. The downside: field welding requires non-destructive testing, paint is applied outdoors, and the asset is practically immovable.

Maintenance is more intensive: weld seams must be inspected and the tank repainted periodically to hold back corrosion.

Concrete: mass and permanence

The reinforced or post-tensioned concrete tank is solid and quiet, ideal for large buried reservoirs or where thermal inertia matters. But civil works are slow, curing takes weeks, and concrete tends to crack, forcing waterproofing and joint sealing throughout its life.

It cannot be expanded or relocated: once poured, it is permanent. So it only makes sense when the project will not change location or size.

Site and life-cycle factors

Beyond the technology itself, project variables often decide the choice:

  • Access and logistics: bolted tanks ship as panels that fit standard trucks, an advantage at remote or hard-to-reach sites. Concrete requires a batching plant or ready-mix trucks nearby.
  • Soil conditions: all three need a foundation, but the lower self-weight of bolted steel reduces demands on soft soils compared with the mass of concrete.
  • Weather during construction: field welding and painting depend on the weather; bolting, with the coating already applied, is less sensitive to rain and humidity.
  • Availability of skilled labor: welding requires certified welders and testing; bolting uses trained assembly crews that are easier to mobilize across the region.

The total cost of ownership over 20-40 years usually tips the balance toward bolted with GFS: lower maintenance, no repaints or long service shutdowns, and the option to recover the asset if the operation changes.

  • Choose bolted if the schedule is critical, the fluid is corrosive (GFS), or the project may grow or move.
  • Choose welded if you need pressure, temperature or a special geometry bolting cannot cover.
  • Choose concrete if the buried volume is huge and the asset is permanent by design.
