What Is the AWWA D103 Standard?

AWWA D103 is the American Water Works Association standard that defines the design, fabrication, factory-applied coatings and erection of bolted steel tanks used to store water. In plain terms: it is the reference standard that ensures a bolted tank is correctly engineered (wind, seismic, loads), built with plates of the right thickness and protected against corrosion by verifiable criteria.

Its full title is "Factory-Coated Bolted Carbon Steel Tanks for Water Storage." It is the bolted counterpart of AWWA D100 (field-welded tanks) and one of the most cited standards when specifying reservoirs for potable water, process water and fire reserve.

What AWWA D103 covers

The standard does not describe a single aspect of the tank but the complete engineering and quality package. Its chapters address several fronts the designer must verify.

  • Structural design: plate thickness calculation, wind loads, seismic loads, hydrostatic pressure and stiffening rings.
  • Materials: carbon steel grades, bolting, gaskets and sealants for the bolted lap joints.
  • Factory coatings: systems applied in-plant under controlled conditions, including glass-fused-to-steel, epoxy and galvanizing, with minimum film thickness and adhesion testing.
  • Erection: tolerances, bolt torque, foundation support and leak tightness.

It helps to distinguish D103 (which defines the tank and its coating) from ISO 28765, which specifies the glass-fused-to-steel enamel in detail. Both are used together in a quality GFS tank.

A "bolted" tank with no standard behind it may have undersized plates, field-applied coatings or inadequate bolting, compromising service life and leak tightness. Requiring AWWA D103 compliance in the specification guarantees:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AWWA D103 and AWWA D100?

D103 covers factory-coated bolted steel tanks; D100 covers field-welded steel tanks. They are sister standards for two different construction methods of water tanks.

Is AWWA D103 mandatory in Paraguay?

It is not a local law, but it is the international technical reference standard and is often required in sanitation and industrial specifications. In Paraguay you should also verify current environmental regulation with MADES and Laws 294/93 and 3239/07 where applicable.

Can an AWWA D103 tank have a glass-fused coating?

Yes. D103 allows factory coatings that include glass-fused-to-steel, epoxy and galvanizing. For the glass-fused option, ISO 28765 is added to detail the enamel.

How long does a tank designed to AWWA D103 last?

With a proper factory coating and basic maintenance, reference service life is on the order of 30 to 40 years or more, especially with glass-fused enamel that needs no repainting.
