Checklist for Buying an Industrial Storage Tank
A decision guide for buying an industrial storage tank: capacity, stored fluid, coating, AWWA D103 standard, foundation, lead time, install, warranty and O&M.
To buy an industrial storage tank well, define nine things, in this order: usable capacity, stored fluid, coating, design standard (for bolted steel, AWWA D103), foundation, lead time, installation method, warranty and an operation and maintenance (O&M) plan. Lock those nine down before you ask for a price and the quotes you receive will actually be comparable, sparing you the classic overrun: discovering on site that the foundation, accessories or a fluid-compatible coating were missing.
This guide turns the decision into a checklist and a reference table so an engineer, a municipality or an agribusiness manager can specify a tank without surprises.
Buying checklist: the 9 points, in order
- Usable and reserve capacity. Define the real operating volume (m³), not just the nominal figure. Add dead volume (bottom to outlet), a safety margin and, where applicable, the fire reserve required by code. A well-sized tank comes from a demand balance, not a round number.
- Stored fluid. Potable water, raw water, effluent, sludge, leachate, process water or fire water: each demands a different coating and accessories. Record pH, temperature, suspended solids and chemical aggressiveness. This data drives the coating choice.
- Coating. For steel, the typical options are glass-fused-to-steel (GFS, per ISO 28765), liquid epoxy, galvanized or stainless steel. GFS neither rusts nor needs repainting; epoxy is cheaper but requires periodic maintenance. For potable water, confirm the coating carries sanitary certification.
- Design standard. Require the structural calculation to follow a recognized standard. For bolted steel tanks, the reference is AWWA D103 (and API 12B in oil applications). The standard sets plate thicknesses, wind and seismic loads and safety factors. With no standard cited, the design cannot be audited.
- Foundation. The concrete slab or ring beam is the project's responsibility, not the tank's, and it is the first thing people forget. Get the load data and foundation drawing from the supplier before you contract civil works, and confirm who executes it.
- Lead time. An imported bolted tank has fabrication time plus ocean logistics. Ask for the door-to-door lead time and separate fabrication, shipping and installation. Bolted steel usually beats welded on site: it erects in weeks, not months.
- Installation method. Hydraulic jacking builds the tank from the top down at ground level, with no scaffolding and no welding at height: safer and faster. Confirm the method, the erection crew and site conditions (access, crane, assembly space).
- Warranty. Separate the coating warranty (GFS can offer long terms) from the structural and installation warranties. Get it in writing with a clear scope.
- Operation and maintenance (O&M). Ask for the manual, the inspection plan and the spare-parts list. A good coating cuts O&M but does not eliminate it: seals, accessories and structure still get inspected.

Lifespan figures are indicative: they depend on the fluid, the climate and the quality of the installation. The final call is made with the fluid analysis in hand.
Common buying mistakes
- Comparing on tank price alone. A quote with no foundation, no installation and no accessories (nozzles, ladders, overflow, level indicator) is not comparable to a complete one.
- Choosing the coating before characterizing the fluid. A poorly chosen epoxy in an aggressive effluent fails within a few years.
- Ignoring the standard. Without AWWA D103 (or equivalent), you cannot verify wind, seismic loads or thicknesses.
- Underestimating the foundation schedule. Concrete needs curing time; if it is not in the plan, installation slips.
