What Is an Aluminum Geodesic Dome and What Is It For?

An aluminum geodesic dome is a self-supporting spherical-cap cover built from a triangulated network of aluminum profiles and aluminum panels. It spans large-diameter tanks and reservoirs with no internal columns (clear-span), does not corrode in humid or gas-laden environments, and weighs a fraction of an equivalent steel or concrete roof. It is used mainly to cover potable-water reservoirs, wastewater treatment tanks, and bulk-storage silos, controlling evaporation, odors, emissions, and the ingress of rain, birds, and light.

How a geodesic dome is built

The geodesic geometry distributes loads across the whole surface instead of concentrating them at a few points. The result is a very stiff structure that uses very little material.
